The mai n ch aracter is Dr. Max Holst, a successful neu rosurg eon. One day an inte nse little man name d Steinmet z s hows up, who has the real ability to create obj ects out o f thin ai r, using only h is min d. As n o one believes hi m at fir st, he is held at a ward for mental patients, but manifests the ke y to his door and escapes. As he has a spec ial inter est in Dr. Hols t, Ste inme tz subseque ntly in vites Holst to his large mansion, which is ful l of expe nsive paintings and sculptures, an d prov es t o him that he can in fact materialise o bjects. Steinmetz’s abil ities are ev olving by le ap s and bounds, and is p rogressing from being able to crea te objects on ly to being ab le to cre ate living th ings. H is ultimate ambit ion is to be able to create a human bei ng. He tells Dr. Holst that if he wi ll only perform a certai n b rain operation on him, Steinmetz will become abl e to at tain his goal. He’s got all t he necessary e qui pment set up in h is basement. Dr . Holst, however, is too spooked by the whole th i ng to ag ree to this mad scheme , an d ref u ses . S teinmetz then sets about manipulating Holst ’ s life , t o pressure him into performing the o peration. B y then Steinmetz has become able to create a temporary human b eing, an d in the hope that he c an per haps make his own creation perfor m the o p erat ion, he manif ests a doppelg anger of Dr. Hols t . This doub le proceeds to take over D r. Holst’ s life, creating cha os for him professi onally and personally. An d then Dr. H o lst starts f ig hting back. The end ing has the dual virtue of bei ng both une xpected and satisfying.
